What Is Your Why? A Property Mentor’s Guide To Finding Your Purpose Feature Image

When it comes to achieving success—be it in life, career, or property investment—understanding your “why” is the ultimate game-changer. It’s the fuel that propels you through challenges and keeps you focused on your goals. In my journey as a property mentor, I’ve seen how a clear, deeply personal “why” can transform not only your financial situation but your entire outlook on life.

So, what is your why? Let’s dive deep into the importance of finding it, how it shapes your decisions, and why it matters more than you might think.

The Concept of “Why”

Your “why” is your driving force—the purpose behind your actions. It’s not just a superficial goal like “I want to make more money” or “I want financial freedom.” Sure, these are valid aspirations, but they’re just the tip of the iceberg. Your true “why” lies deeper. It’s about what motivates you at a core level.

For many of us, it takes time and a bit of soul-searching to figure it out. I’ve been there myself, spinning in circles with surface-level reasons that didn’t truly resonate. It wasn’t until I did the hard work of peeling back the layers that I found a purpose that genuinely excites me and drives my actions every single day.

Why Most People Struggle to Find Their Why

A common problem I see, even with people eager to build wealth through property, is the struggle to articulate their “why.” I struggled with this for the longest time too. When you ask people “what is your why?” you invariably get the usual response – so I can take care of my family, so I can make sure my kids are set up, etc etc. That’s a very common and valid reason to generate wealth and prosperity. But – its only surface level and does not require much thought.

To be completely honest, most people are just on auto pilot – going through the robotic life they have always known. They have a job; they make enough money to survive, and they generally think they are doing just fine. But there is no passion, no excitement and definitely no purpose.

This is not life! This is existing. I was challenged on this early on when I started working with my current mentor – Melissa Fisher. She was pretty much in my face saying yeh I hear you – money gives you freedom and you can set your own agenda and blah blah blah – BUT WHY???? I was pretty deflated as I thought I had done a good job of working out the answer to ‘What is your Why’. But no – it takes a bit of a deeper dive under the hood to even start figuring some of this stuff out.

Lessons from a Financial Planner

I recently spoke with Jacques, a financial planner with a compelling answer to “what is you why.” Jaques is a super nice guy, who thinks globally about financial planning and how he can best help people get on track with their money – including their relationship with money. He was talking about himself as a younger man, who bought into a business in South Africa. It was a business that had great potential – but he was about 10 years ahead of himself, and the market was not quite what he had thought resulting in him just about losing everything.

He said I remember watching my kids playing in the backyard and thinking to himself – Jesus – how am I going to pay the mortgage and find money to feed these kids??? They were on the bones of their arse and lost everything. Not a pleasant position at all. When they recovered (after much hard work) he was determined that he would never put himself or his family in such a diabolical financial position again. From that day forward he committed to making it his mission to educate people about money and teach them to not only create a better financial position, but to learn about money and how best to have a healthy relationship with it. This is Jacques’s “Why”. He is very clear about it.

This powerful story is a perfect example of how a personal “why” can become a guiding light, shaping not only your career but the lives of others.

Property Mentor And Financial Planner Living Their Why With Clients

My Personal Why as a Property Mentor

Like Jacques, my “why” was born out of personal hardship. In my case, I have had a couple of less than desirable relationships that have been particularly traumatic – resulting in me having to start again from scratch. None of this is fun and, in both cases, resulted in me losing just about everything –my relationship with my daughter, my property portfolio, my assets, my sanity, my self-confidence, my self-worth, you name it. These dark times left scars, but they also ignited a fire in me and is the foundation of my answer to ‘What is your why’.

My purpose now is to do my best to educate people, especially women, who have been or are in similar situations. To help them see that there is hope, and that you can build wealth through property, even from the lowest starting point. This drives me, motivates me and I want to build a community of like-minded people who want to build real wealth and who give a shit about others,

As a property mentor, I guide my clients to see the possibilities, take actionable steps, and build real wealth. It’s this mission that gets me out of bed at 5 a.m. every day ready to take on the world.

Why Your Why Matters in Property Investment

If you’re thinking about venturing into property, understanding your “why” is critical. Why? Because property isn’t just about numbers and renovations. It’s about creating a better future—whether that’s achieving financial independence, breaking free from a soul-sucking job, or building something to pass down to your kids.

When challenges arise—and they will—your “why” will keep you grounded. It’s the difference between giving up and pushing through when a deal doesn’t go as planned or when unexpected costs hit during a renovation.

Tips to Discover ‘Why’

  1. Reflect on Your Past Experiences
Think back to moments that left a lasting impact. Were there hardships that shaped you? Victories that inspired you? Often, our most powerful answer to “what is your why” is rooted in these defining experiences.
  2. Ask Yourself Hard Questions
    • What drives you?
    • What do you want to achieve with your time on this planet?
    • How do you want to impact others?
  3. Write It Down
Journaling is a great way to organise your thoughts. Write about what matters most to you and how you want to be remembered.
  4. Test Your Why
Share it with someone you trust. If it doesn’t make you feel excited or emotional when you explain it, dig deeper.
