If you’ve been around me for a while, you’ll know I have a few wild renovation stories to tell. From nightmarish delays to stunning renovation transformations, each project is an adventure. When someone recently asked me which renovation transformation stood out as my favourite, I couldn’t help but reminisce about one incredible project in East Victoria Park earlier this year.
It wasn’t just the process that made this house unforgettable, but the jaw-dropping results and the massive difference small, strategic changes can make. Let’s dive into the story of this renovation transformation—what made it challenging, rewarding, and a prime example of how powerful renovating can be.
Starting With a House Full of Potential
Bought to us by a buyer’s agent, the East Vic Park Property didn’t look like much when it landed on our radar, but it had ‘good bones.’ It was one of those houses that, despite its tired appearance, held immense renovation transformation potential. The owners had been renting it out for years after relocating to Melbourne. It was dated and had a strange floor plan that just didn’t work.
Enter our team, armed with a vision for what this house could become. We arranged an option deal with the owners to handle the renovation, staging, and sale. Our goal wasn’t just to turn a profit but to solve a problem for the owners while creating a home that would wow its future family.
Key Elements of the Renovation Transformation
Every renovation transformation has key milestones, and this was no exception. From layout adjustments to stunning flooring, we unlocked this home’s full potential.
1. The Floor Plan Makeover
The existing floor plan was one of the first hurdles we tackled. It felt boxed-in and awkward, so we set out to open things up. By improving the flow between the kitchen, living, and dining areas, the house went from feeling cramped to spacious.
The natural beauty of the jarrah flooring hidden under the hideous old carpet was an unexpected bonus. Once refinished, these floors became a focal point, adding warmth and character in this renovation transformation.
2. Modernising the Kitchen and Bathrooms
No renovation is complete without addressing the kitchen and bathrooms. We opened up the kitchen to create a more functional and inviting space. As for the ensuite bathroom—it was a relic of the 80s, complete with a wall of frosted glass tiles.
We reimagined the bathroom entirely: floor-to-ceiling tiles, a sleek freestanding bath, and an open-layout shower area. The transformation was dramatic—proof that modern design and smart layout choices can breathe new life into any space.
3. Extending the Jarrah Flooring
Continuing the jarrah flooring throughout the home was no small feat. It required sourcing and installing recycled jarrah floorboards to maintain a consistent look throughout the property. It was a massive job and our amazing carpenter Julien, worked tirelessly to achieve an stunning look. In an inner-city location like Victoria Park, next level finishes are a must.
Overcoming Renovating Challenges
As with any renovation, this project had its fair share of hiccups. From accidental mishaps—like the team leaving the taps off and killing our freshly laid grass (oops!) so we quickly had to find more grass before the first home open—to the sheer scale of refinishing and extending the flooring, it was all about resourcefulness and dealing with challenges methodically.
The truth is, no renovation transformation goes entirely according to plan. But that’s part of the thrill. Solving problems and seeing the final results come together makes the process so satisfying.
Why This Renovation Transformation Stands Out
What makes this renovation transformation my favourite isn’t just the amazing visual transformation (although it was stunning). It’s the pride the team, particularly our carpenter Julien, took in the work. Watching him pour his heart and craftmanship into perfecting those jarrah floors reminded me why I love renovating.
This project also highlighted the impact of small changes that make a big difference. By addressing the layout, flooring, and bathrooms, we turned a tired rental into a vibrant family home.
Even better? The owners were thrilled with the results, and the property sold after just one home open. The win-win outcome for everyone involved made this renovation transformation unforgettable.
The Joy of Renovating
While we didn’t make a massive profit; sometimes profit isn’t everything. Renovating is more than just flipping properties for profit. It’s about creating homes where families can build their lives. It’s about giving butt-ugly properties new leases on life and empowering tradespeople like Julien flourish and shine.
